What"s in it for Me?
There are many people on this earth who are constantly striving to get on the next step up on the ladder of life!  When they get there they are seldom satisfied and try to rise another and another.  They seem to think that happiness is defined by what they gain matierially.  A new house or a new car they think will make them more fullfilled.  The problem with this kind of thinking is that they are seldom satisfied and just want more and more.   The more they attain, the less time they have for spending time for what is really important, having a right relationship with God.

Some people wonder why I write these "Friendly Thoughts" and put them on the Web.   Why would I want to put time and effort in a task that does not bring me monetary gain?  In other words 'What's in it for me?'  The answer is that since I am confined to a wheel chair and am in front of my computer all day it gives me something to do. It also gives me a better relationship with God and feeds my spiritual nature. We all have a spiritual nature.  It simply remains latent in some people who put all their effort into gaining material wealth.   Not that gaining wealth is bad, it just should not keep us from a right relationship with God.

Many people try to gain wealth to impress others.  I am sure there are those who just enjoy the thought of "Just wait until my friends see me in my new Cadillac."  The problem with this kind of thinking is we often neglect what would make us feel good inside.  What gets you excited about life?  What charges you up?  These are questions that we should be asking ourselves instead of trying to show off for the benefit of our neighbors.

What is it that makes you feel good inside or impresses you?   Is it a life without stress?   Is it an adrenaline rush?  When you accomplish something how does it make you feel?  I would just ask you "Are you impressed with a person with great wealth, or a person who has a relaxed and a happy nature?"  Are you more impressed with a person who owns a Cadillac, or a person whose relationship with God makes them smile and be happy all the time and appears to enjoy life?

What's in it for me?   Why not ask the question, 'How can I make some contribution that will make some other person happy?'   Try fitting 10 minutes a day of prayer into your busy schedule  This one simple change could make a world of difference in your life!   It may not give you any monetary gain, but it could give you a more relaxed and satisfying feeling as you draw nearer to God.

Prayer
Dear Lord, thank you for our spiritual nature.
Help us to fill it with your presence in our lives  Amen

This hymn was recorded during a Dublin, IN Friends Meeting for Worship before my strokes in 1998 took my singing voice away.
